The Story-Faced Man
His voice seems to emerge from the shadows, a low honeyed whisper cracking with emotion and hinted memories from lost corners of culture, some of them historical and some mythological. Vinicio Capossela pulls deep on Italy’s musical traditions and has invented an entirely new one, uniquely inhabited by himself. His references include the rural wedding music of southern Italy as well as waltzes, polkas, gritty Americana, beat literature and cabaret. Over 20 years, he has become one of the best-selling artists in Italy, an incredible achievement for an artist so viscerally individual and who has been known to record in caves.
The Story-Faced Man, his long-awaited debut UK release, is a collection of songs from five of his albums. Tracks include early classics like ‘Che coss’è l’amor’, a romantic Latin swing delivered with all the guile of a matinee idol. Darker forces dominate on the more recent ‘La Brucia Troia’, Capossela’s ode to the Minotaur featuring long-time collaborator Mark Ribot. Velvety moods take hold again on ‘La Faccia Della Terra’, with Calexico’s Joey Burns and John Convertino. Capossela has an extraordinary gift for story-telling which is transmitted even if you’re not an Italian speaker, the melodies carry the narrative. This is a superb portal to his labyrinthine world.
